When does the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) pay off?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is touted as one of the necessary key competences for the coming decades. But does it really make sense to rely on AI everywhere?

The main aim of the use of AI is that human decisions are largely taken over automatically by computers and machines. But this is not always effective.

Essentially, automating a task should meet at least one of the following "4 Ds" to make the application of AI motivated and meaningful:

  • D1: dull
  • D2: dirty
  • D3: dangerous
  • D4: difficult

If none of the 4 criteria are met, traditional methods can normally be used effectively and the application of AI is not required unconditionally.
